Every night, I sing a song or two to the baby before going to sleep. I've done this for months, and in that time, I've expanded my repertoire, which started with a simple "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," to include bits of "My Darling" by Wilco, "Good Night" by the Beatles and "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor (to name a few).Because music is such an important part of my life (my head is a vast repository of lyrics), and because my tastes are eclectic (hitting shuffle on my iPod just now produced the following string of artists: Pete Yorn, Metallica, Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond and Damien Rice), I find myself wondering: Are there any cool, hip lullaby-type songs for babies? For that matter, are there any songs for kids that aren't overly perky and condescending, or that aren't sung by foam animals and borderline pedophiles?
I'm realizing that the arrival of the baby is going to make maintaining some sort of musical standards without forcing my tastes on him or her (I myself was raised on '70s mellow gold like Little River Band) a real challenge.
I did a quick search last night for "hip songs for baby" and was shocked at what passes for "hip" these days. Ninny Cow Tea? Mr. David?
Good grief.
